As the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup nears its completion, one Racing Louisville FC player is still alive in the competition: Australia midfielder Alex Chidiac.
The co-hosting Australians kick off at 3 a.m. ET Saturday in the World Cup quarterfinals against France, with the match set to be broadcast on FOX or WDRB-41 locally. Chidiac and the Australians have their sights set on becoming just the third host nation to reach the semifinals of the competition.
Chidiac, 24, has made one appearance so far for the Matildas, coming off the bench as a substitute in a 3-2 loss to Nigeria in the group stage. The winner of the prestigious Julie Dolan Medal, given to the top player in the Australia W-League, has made 10 appearances and two starts this season for Racing.
Racing can already consider itself a winner in the World Cup, thanks to six players representing their countries and making 17 appearances while tallying eight goals and three assists. Even as other clubs from around the world catch up in the goal contributions category, including powerhouses Olympique Lyonnais, Arsenal and Barcelona, Racing still ranks in the top five globally.
Brazilian star Ary Borges opened her debut World Cup with a hat trick, while Thembi Kgatlana scored the game-winner in stoppage time of the group stage finale to help South Africa advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in the nation’s history. Wang Shuang converted two penalties for China, and Uchenna Kanu scored a goal for the Nigerians. Midfielder Savannah DeMelo earned two starts for the U.S. Women’s National Team in the group stage.
Back home, Racing returns to NWSL regular-season action on August 19 as the club aims to set a new attendance record. Fans can watch the best players in the world right here in Louisville. Find tickets via RacingLouFC.com/tickets.
