Evelyn Shores scored both goals Saturday night at Lynn Family Stadium as Racing Louisville FC lost 2-0 to Angel City FC, marking its third consecutive defeat.
Shores became the second Angel City player in consecutive games to score a brace, with both goals coming in the second half.
It was a tough night for a Racing Louisville team that was one of the best in the NWSL in August, winning four of six. Head coach Bev Yanez captured it perfectly: “The sport’s cruel.”
Angel City tallied just two shots on target prior to Shores’ opener. Defensively, Louisville limited a visiting attack that put five goals past Boston Legacy FC last Monday night.
The Racing attack failed to find the scoresheet Saturday for the first time since July 10. Louisville had scored multiple goals in the six games leading up to this result.
“They did everything we thought they would do,” Yanez said of Angel City. “… Based off what we thought they would present, they did the same game plan, or similar style of game plan against Boston.”
“[We] definitely felt prepared for what they were going to bring. … Really felt like it wasn’t a 2-0 game. I think there were chances on both ends. … They, of course, put their chances away. … From that standpoint, there are a lot of takeaways.”
Quality opportunities were at a premium in the opening half, as both sides combined for just one shot on target.
The weather surely played a part in the sluggish first period of play. The temperature at the time of kickoff was just a touch below a blistering 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Out of almost nothing, Shores broke the deadlock in the 69th minute for Angel City as she found the corner from outside the box for her second goal involvement in as many games.
“The reality is that in the game there’s going to be goals that are scored and there’s going to be players that make plays,” said defender Quincy McMahon. “Props to [Shores]. That was an amazing finish from her. That is just the nature of soccer. … I think for us, we had opportunities. … I think just capitalizing on those early on.”
Despite conceding, Louisville continued to search for an equalizer, but to no avail. Shores put the game out of reach for the visitors in stoppage time, getting in behind the backline and making no mistake with a right-footed finish off a pass from Ally Sentnor.
Seven games now remain on 13th-place Racing’s schedule with nine points separating Louisville from Angel City, which holds the final playoff spot.
“We’re going to work every single game to try to win and to push,” said midfielder Katie O’Kane. “Until the very last game, there’s never a thought of, ‘OK, we’re done.’ I think we’re going to go into every single game trying to win so that we can see whatever happens happens. We’ll never stop pushing.”
Racing caps off a two-game home stand Friday when it welcomes the league-leading Gotham FC to Lynn Family Stadium for Pups at the Pitch Night. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. ET.
