When you grow up roughly 30 minutes outside of London, you almost have no choice when it comes to picking up the game of football.
But for England native Jo Chubb, it went far beyond simply picking up the game. Largely inspired by her older brother, Chubb developed a lifelong passion for football — one that has now brought her to Racing Louisville.
In April, Chubb became one of Bev Yanez’s latest additions to Racing’s technical staff, joining as the club’s individual development coach following four years as the head coach of the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer program.
Chubb plied her trade in the collegiate game for many years prior to making the jump to Louisville ahead of this season. It’s a leap that, nearly halfway through the season, has been generally straightforward.
“It’s been really smooth. It’s been pretty seamless,” Chubb said. “I think a lot of that is down to the staff that I joined. They’re an incredible group, and they made it pretty easy. They made it pretty comfortable straight away. They allowed me to dive in — bring my own ideas.”
As a head coach, Chubb led Coastal Carolina to its first winning season in over five years back in 2024 — more than doubling its win total from the previous campaign.
As a player, Chubb was a standout midfielder at the University of North Alabama, where she earned four All-Gulf South Conference selections and an All-South Region honor. She then spent a combined 10 years as an assistant coach, making stops at the University of South Alabama and Arizona State University, before landing the head coaching gig at Coastal Carolina.
“I’m definitely someone that is going to jump two feet going into these things and get my feet wet as quickly as I can,” Chubb said of her new role. “It’s really exciting for me. It keeps me busy. It’s been really enjoyable learning … the staff individually and collectively, learning the players individually and collectively and learning the league.”
While leading Coastal Carolina, Chubb found that the player development side of coaching was partially missing. In a way, that’s why this new position on Racing’s staff spoke to her so much.
“This role that I have here marries my two passions within the environment, in terms of I get to develop players and I get to create real relationships,” she said. “…What I’m doing currently is either individual or small group work, so it’s a lot more personal, which is nice.
“You get to learn each other a lot more than you do in a big group setting. I get to really knuckle down into what is going to make each specific player better on a day-to-day and a long-term basis.”
Chubb’s vast experiences, not only as a coach, but also as a player in the United States and abroad, have allowed her to realize the importance of treating every player as an individual.
It’s this philosophy — meeting each player where they are, and investing fully in their growth — that Chubb now brings to a new role on Racing’s technical staff, one that’s set to be influential to success in more ways than one.
“The biggest objective for me is for each player to feel as though they’re paid attention to, that they are an individual and that we’re able to create these short-term goals and gains for them but also long as well, Chubb said. “The goal of us as a staff is to develop the players as much as we can.
“We feel if we develop them individually and collectively, we’re going to become better. So I think it’s just finding ways to keep tuning into the players as individuals and seeing … what is that element that they feel is going to be that light bulb for them to bring their game closer to what they want it to be to allow them to be the best versions for themselves.”
