In its final go-around away from home this year, Racing Louisville FC visits an expansion side for the second week running, as it faces Denver Summit FC Saturday evening.
Racing’s road finale, which will take place at altitude — roughly a mile above sea level — at Centennial Stadium in Centennial, Colo., is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. MT).
Louisville paid the NWSL’s East Coast expansion outfit, Boston Legacy FC, a visit last Friday. Racing (7-18-3, 24 points) fell behind early, but equalized, before a goal on the other side of halftime led Boston to a 2-1 win in its final match at Gillette Stadium.
The margins were slim yet again on the road for Louisville. The defeat at the Legacy marked Racing’s third by a single goal out of its last four away matches.
Louisville’s previous meeting with the Summit was also of the narrow variety, though it took place just under 150 days ago (May 29).
Substitute Ally Brazier, who hasn’t played for Denver since Aug. 22, scored the game’s only goal in a Summit win over Racing at Lynn Family Stadium.
Despite being out of playoff contention, Racing could play spoiler in Colorado.
As of now, Denver (10-10-8, 38 points) can still punch its ticket to the NWSL playoffs. However, it needs six points from six to close out the season, in addition to multiple favorable results elsewhere, to do so.
The Summit’s playoff hopes could even end before Saturday’s kickoff if Seattle Reign FC beats Utah Royals FC Friday night.
After Matchweek 22 (Sept. 16-20), the Summit were a mere three points off the eighth and final playoff place. That gap for Denver is now five points, with Seattle currently occupying the last postseason spot.
The Summit have followed up a five-game unbeaten run with defeats in two of their last three matches. The lone result was a 3-0 win at 16th-place Chicago Stars FC on Oct. 4. Angel City FC erased Denver’s early two-goal lead last week, scoring three goals in 11 minutes to take a 3-2 victory before 12,372 fans at Centennial Stadium.

Story Lines …
Rookie puts pen to paper: Earlier this week, Racing agreed to a contract extension with standout rookie defender Mirann Gacioch. The deal keeps Gacioch with the club through the 2028 season. The Ohio State University product has quickly emerged as a dependable regular in the center of Louisville’s defensive line. She has been one of Racing’s most consistent performers, particularly since the end of the NWSL’s summer break. She is one of eight players across the league, dating back to July, with at least 42 possessions won in the defensive third and 40 clearances.
How ’bout Fischer?: Kayla Fischer forced Boston Legacy’s goalkeeper into error last Friday en route to converting her eighth goal of the season. She claims sole possession of the team’s goal lead with Racing’s lone goal at Boston, breaking a tie with Emma Sears. She has now doubled her goal contribution total from last season — improving from 6 to 12 and counting. Of the 22 players in the NWSL to net eight or more goals this year, Fischer is one of 10 to reach the mark without registering a penalty.
A first in the books: After receiving an increase in minutes over the last few weeks, rookie Macy Philippus earned her first professional start in the Legacy defeat. The Texas Tech University product played 73 minutes at Boston in the right wingback role, creating a chance while also finishing tied for the team lead in final third entries (4). Philippus, 23, had previously appeared in six matches off the bench. She is the ninth player under 24 currently on the roster to earn a start for Louisville this season.
Dual captain things: A major difference for the Summit since its trip to Lynn Family Stadium in May is the presence of U.S. Women’s National Team captain Lindsey Heaps. Heaps, a Colorado native, officially arrived in Denver in July after finishing the season out with French side OL Lyonnes. She signed a pre-contract through the 2029 season in January with the Summit. Since her first match for the club on July 18, Heaps has racked up six goals and three assists in 11 appearances — all of which she wore the captain’s armband. The midfielder is currently on a run of six straight games with at least one goal contribution.
Points slipping away: Amid its quest for a playoff appearance in its first season, Denver has dropped the second-most points from winning positions in the NWSL (20), trailing only Portland Thorns FC (25). The Summit’s struggles in holding onto results have become more prominent in the last few weeks, letting a league-high 10 points slip since the beginning of September. Denver has failed to protect three two-goal leads across its last six matches, with two of those instances occurring on home soil.
