Racing Louisville FC dropped its fourth consecutive game Friday night, this one by a 2-1 score to league-leading Gotham FC after Jaedyn Shaw netted the game-winner early in the second half at Lynn Family Stadium.
Kayla Fischer recorded Racing’s lone goal of the night, equalizing after Guro Reiten opened the scoring inside the first 10 minutes. Shaw, however, went on to convert the winner a mere 35 seconds out of the locker room to lift the current NWSL Shield leaders to a victory.
Gotham extended its lead atop the table to five points, while Louisville remained 13th.
Fischer’s finish matched Louisville’s single-season high for goals scored (35), which was set last year over 26 matches, as the club rebounded from a shutout last weekend to Angel City FC.
Louisville did test the league’s best defense, finishing with the edge in expected goals (1.57 to 1.11) and big chances (4 to 2).
“To be honest, I’m very proud of the group,” said head coach Bev Yanez. “Result aside, we wanted the result to be different, of course. That’s a no-brainer. [We] can’t concede off of a kickoff that early into the second half.
“… [I] thought we had a fantastic first half — fantastic first half. [I] thought we were able to put them under. I thought we lived very true, through and through, to our identity. We spoke about a bit more confidence in possession. … Proud of the group’s performance — tough to concede off the kickoff like that.”
It took just seven minutes for the league leaders to get on the scoresheet. The Norwegian, Reiten, fired a shot from outside the box into the top corner for her first NWSL goal.
The response was almost immediate from the hosts, as Fischer converted through a 17th-minute set piece. The Ohio State product headed in her seventh goal of the season from close range, finding herself in the right place at the right time after Courtney Petersen’s corner kick struck the far post.
It marked Fischer’s seventh goal of the season, drawing her even with Emma Sears for the team lead. Fischer now has 11 goal contributions in 2026 — five more than her career-high from last year.
The goal was also the first Gotham has conceded from a set piece this season.
“Courtney put in such a good ball, and she almost scored on that one,” said Fischer. “So, I mean it was right on the goal, and I had to do something and put it in. … Her (Courtney) and Katie’s (O’Kane) services are really good.”
Similar to the loss away at San Diego Wave FC two weeks ago, Gotham punished Racing going forward right out of halftime.
Shaw put the visitors back in front early in the final period, scoring the fastest second-half league goal of the season in the 46th minute, with Sam Kerr providing the assist.
As a team at the top of the table has done time and time again this year, Gotham saw out the match, holding Racing without a shot for the final 15 minutes of the match en route to its seventh road victory.
“It’s definitely a game to be proud of, in a way,” said Racing’s Sarah Weber. “I think our fight was maybe better than it has been, so at least taking pride in that and looking at things we can control after that.”
